Resort top for growth in domestic visitors
New Zealanders are increasingly choosing Wanaka as their holiday destination, with the resort recording the largest percentage increase in recently released domestic visitor tourism figures.

Statistics New Zealand has released figures for the month of November which showed Wanaka recorded the largest percentage increase in domestic visitor numbers from around the country.

The resort town recorded an impressive 40% increase in domestic guest nights compared with November 2009, Statistics NZ's commercial accommodation monitor results showed.

The 40% increase in domestic guest nights for November last year outshone the national average 6.6% increase of domestic visitors for other New Zealand destinations.

Lake Wanaka Tourism general manager James Helmore said the increase in the number of New Zealand holidaymakers visiting Wanaka was pleasing.

"Many other traditional centres had recorded a drop in numbers for the same time," he said.

Wanaka's accommodation monitor results also showed the highest number of guest nights recorded for November.

Not only were more people staying, but they also stayed longer, with visit stay length figures up 6.7%, Mr Helmore said.
